In a quiet suburb of Los Angeles, 18-year-old Maddy Whittier lives an isolated life due to a rare immune condition known as SCID. Only three people are allowed inside their sanitized home: Pauline, Maddy’s nurse Carla, and Carla’s daughter, Rosa. Maddy has never been outside or interacted with anyone beyond this circle. Despite her condition, she dreams of experiencing the outside world — especially the ocean.

Everything changes when a new family moves into the house next door. Maddy notices their teenage son, who seems to be around her age. That evening, while she and her mother are watching a movie, the boy and his sister come by with a bundt cake as a friendly gesture. Pauline declines the gift and tells them Maddy isn’t home, even though she is. Realizing her daughter is curious about the boy, Pauline becomes even more controlling, attempting to prevent any interaction.
