In 1987, 13-year-old Jenna Rink, an awkward and bookish teenager, dreams of becoming popular. In an effort to gain favor with the Six Chicks—the most popular group at school, led by the bossy "Tom-Tom"—she offers to complete their homework in exchange for them attending her birthday party. Her best friend and neighbor, Matty Flamhaff, who secretly harbors feelings for her, gives her a handcrafted dollhouse topped with "magic wishing dust."

At the party, the Six Chicks arrive with a bunch of boys, including Jenna’s crush, Chris Grandy. They play a cruel prank on her, tricking her into thinking Chris wants to play “seven minutes in heaven.” While Jenna waits for him in the closet, they take the homework and leave. Matty finds her heartbroken, and as she shuts herself in the closet, she wishes with tears in her eyes to be “thirty, flirty, and thriving,” just as the wishing dust falls on her.

The following morning, Jenna wakes up as a 30-year-old woman in a lavish apartment on Fifth Avenue in 2004. After overhearing Lucy scheming to exclude her from a major rebranding pitch at Poise, Jenna goes back to her hometown in New Jersey, reconnects with her parents, and reaches out to Matty for help with the presentation. They grow closer again, although Matty is engaged to a woman named Wendy, who wants him to relocate to Chicago.

Jenna’s pitch is a success, but Lucy deceives Matty by telling him that Jenna didn’t use his photos and tricks him into signing them over to her. Suddenly, Jenna finds herself back in 1987 on her 13th birthday. This time, when Matty opens the closet door, she embraces him joyfully and kisses him. She then stands up to Lucy and the other Six Chicks, tears up the homework she had done for them, and kicks them out of her house.
